Johnson Ranch is a newly built trail in San Luis Obispo.  The outer loop is 2.3 miles long.  The park, recently built, is 243 acres in size.

This is  great trail for beginning bikers who are experimenting with riding single track.  It is also a great training ride if you’d like to loop it over and over again.

The short distance, combined with an abundance of runners and hikers, may persuade hard core riders to look elsewhere.    However, the beautiful scenery and local history associated with the ride makes it worth the while if only ridden once.

  1. As a new Mountain Biker this ride has been one the best yet. I went on on a weekday there wasnt one person there. CCCMB did a great job building this trail. There’s a good mix of climbs and downhills.Around great trail .And it looks like there adding on to it.

  2. Rode the trail twice (clockwise and counterclockwise) and it was a blast. Started at 8:00am on Tuesday, and not a walker or jogger or dog in sight. Also, it was nice they moved the cows since I last hiked it..didn’t have to dodge the pies! Beautiful morning, fun with friends..great way to start the day.

  3. Yeah, this trail is great, especially for mtn. biking (not the most exciting to just hike). Very well constructed, SMOOTH! I was very pleased to ride this after riding incredibly rocky sections in Irish Hills.

  4. Anyone interested in riding this on Saturday morning, the 20th?

Visiting relatives for the weekend – have a couple of hours open and want to get a ride in.

    Thanks.

  6. Gorgeous setting. Beautifully maintained. The wildflowers are blooming. Met several other hikers who were also pleased to have this trail. Thanks to the city and Johnson Ranch owners for this addition.

  7. LOVE IT out there!!!! Hiked it today for the first time, nice to have something a little different, not hard so are able to use your speed to make it more difficult. I can’t wait to bring my mtn bike out. But I was wondering now that the other loop is open, what is the total distance. I know darn well it does not take be 50 minutes to hike/brisk walk 2.5 miles. HELP!!!!! I can’t find this information anywhere and google maps satelite view is not updated enough for me to measure it. Thank you!!!

  8. Just got back from the ride. GREAT ride if you are just getting into mountainbiking or need to get back into shape. I did the long loop twice and its awesome. Gradual climbs and cool little downhills. Lots of hikers today. I went on friday @about 11:00am 5/21/10. will go and do more loops till im back in shape for Montana De Oro.

  9. First time out on mountain bike (considering switching from road biking now that so many bikers are getting hit/edged out by text-ers and oversized truck mirrors).
Johnson, which I’ve run several times, is a great start. What a blast. Only two other bikers and two hikers on trail. Bikers also were on their first time.

Went at 7:00 p.m. Sun setting, SLO scenery beautiful as always. No wild pigs spotted and cattle safely on opposite hillside.

  10. First off, I want to thank CCCMB for creating this trail. It is hard not to feel blessed to have people out there willing to give so much of their time to create great trails like this! This was only my third time out and I am pretty out of shape so it did kick my butt, but the trail was very well designed and very well maintained. I would suggest starting south if you are also a beginner so you are riding up the most technical parts, which will allow for a nice steady downhill on the last half of the ride. We went at 615 on Tuesday and we only had one other biker and a runner so it was not bad in that aspect.
